When No One Owns the Process, Dangers Lurk
 

While retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) forms the backbone of large language models used to power GenAI, few legal teams know about the risks it presents. According to Alok Priyadarshi, vice president of strategic AI advisory and legal transformation at QuisLex, no one in most organizations owns RAG, which leads to critical blind spots.
 

"RAG spans legal, information governance and IT but is usually built inside AI teams outside those control frameworks," Priyadarshi told Information Week in a recent article “Nobody told legal about your RAG pipeline -- why that's a problem.” 
 

In order to overcome these blind spots, organizations need three core capabilities, he said:
 

• System visibility, or knowing what exists and what it includes
• Decision traceability, or being able to recreate how the output was built  
• Controlled change management, or being able to track what was changed and when that happened
