Prior to joining QuisLex, I spent my entire legal career with three of the largest U.S. banks, where I was part of a legal team that moved an entire enterprise to the cloud, stood up a privacy program and worked through two major data breaches. These experiences in a highly regulated environment gave me a unique skillset – building processes from scratch, maintaining existing successful processes and managing and remediating worst-case scenarios. QuisLex offered an opportunity to hone these skills as a leader and subject matter expert while working with global corporate clients in the areas of law I am most passionate about, data protection and privacy.
 

At QuisLex, I get to be a crusader for a fundamental human right, the right to privacy. I provide legal guidance to corporate clients and play an integral role in helping them build out their privacy programs, often for the first time. I understand the various challenges they face, from funding to resource availability. And yet, I’ve found the most difficult hurdle to overcome is when the rest of the company is resistant to changing the way they work and accepting the additional due diligence that comes with protecting personal data. To move past the resistance roadblock, I draw on my experience and focus on educating the enterprise by providing clear explanations and resources that emphasize the importance of protecting personal data. Through a period of socialization and training, it is possible to build a culture that embraces cutting-edge technology while also ensuring risks are identified and properly managed. Ultimately, for a privacy program to truly be successful, the broader business culture must be ready and willing to receive, implement, and maintain the appropriate legal controls.

Melissa Paulk is a Senior Commercial Attorney at QuisLex

She earned her Juris Doctor from the University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law (UDC Law).  

Outside of the office, you can find Melissa traveling, eating good food, scrapbooking, reading, and writing stories. She is also an avid runner; her longest race is a half marathon (13.1 miles) and she is working towards a full marathon (26.2 miles). She loves to travel to run different trails, especially through national parks of other countries. Her last global run was in Iceland last June and she is currently planning her next run in Japan in the fall of 2024.
